Carter was surprised when his name was announced as the winner of the award for Acoustic
Musician, but he was doubly surprised when he was called back up to receive the award for
Male Vocalist. The only people not surprised were those who frequent Hello Delly, a
venue at the Beach where David performs during the week. What started out as a
quiet, intimate little club, is becoming a popular, crowded one as word continues to
spread of Carter's performances there.
"That is probably my strongest asset, the fact that I get along so well with an
audience. I really love working with a crowd and I think they can tell that."
Carter has been playing for 14 years -- since he was 12 years old -- and being left-handed
didn't make it any easier. "I had to really want to play to put up with playing
backwards. But fortunately, it wasn't long before I discovered left-handed
instruments."
While he was a student at Elon College in North Carolina, he put together his first album,
and his song "Pack It Up", reached number 18 for the year on the charts at WSOE,
the local radio station.
"I hope to be back in the studio within six months working on another album.
I'll probably start out with a cassette and market it myself, but I have a lot of
originals I'm really proud of and anxious to get out."
Carter will possibly include some of the more requested covers he performs at Hello Delly
as well. He has a repertoire of over 500 songs.
Carter favors his custom Ovation over his other guitars, but he also plays a Martin D-35,
Guild F-550 12 string, and a Gibson ES-335. As a result of his awards, there should
be an even larger crowd at the club watching him switch from one to the other during his
sets.
